the magic to remaining curious in your craft 1:03

Maintaining a state of curiosity towards your craft is a sure way to develop your skillset and mental configuration of subject matter. The more your exercise your imagination, the more sustenance your creativity can produce. Children can easily build onto their fantasies because their focus is solely on what is being formed within their heads, rather than having the concern of all things outside of that, which seem to typically develop as they grow into adulthood.

When we hone in on one skill, with one subject matter, we can easily become a master. This is the path addressed as ideal, however I believe the opposite path, the one of experimenting and versatility is the best way for an artist to grow into themselves and the skillset placed within them. Projects can take a few moments longer to actualise when you're working with a multitude of medium in a variety of ways, but the results will not disappoint as tied into it, are ideas from so many explorations and experiments that the work cannot be replicated.

Some of my most favourite artworks I have produced have been the product of stress and expectation free experimenting, with use of various tools as the piece develops. This relaxed approach to my art has allowed the creativity to flow, which can be hindered if we attempt to dam off all possibilities except the one we attempt to force. Creativity flows, and so should our approach as artists.

Some ways I stay curious and experimental :

  1. Collecting and playing with a variety of mediums, I move between them depending on what I want to make. Having the variety of tools allows me to actualise many of my creative thoughts.
  2. Observing nature and taking full inspiration from its simple complexity, it exists but not with strain
  3. Design mock ups! even if I am to postpone the physical creation, creating theoretical designs and sketches allows my mind to flow onto the next rather than holding onto each thought (which would definitely hinder this flow)
  4. Artist research. A skill learnt in school that I will take with me forever ! Finding art you love and then learning about the artists and their process feels so intimate and special. You develop a new appreciation for the work when you have a glimpse of how each line or curve was formed, and with what intention. If you like an art piece, I recommend you research the artist.
  5. Remove all limiting beliefs about what can be made ! How can one be great if they doubt greatness ? its impossible and will prevent your potential.

I hope this list can be of use. Let us all create freely and with only feelings of excitement, curiosity and love šŸ’—
